Kapama Private Game Reserve is a 15,000-hectare (150 km²) family-owned Big Five reserve in Limpopo, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem near Hoedspruit. It has five lodges ranging from the intimate 10-tent Buffalo Camp to the ultra-luxurious Karula, plus Camp Jabulani — home to a rescued herd of 16 elephants. All-inclusive nightly rates for 2026 start at approximately R12,000 per person sharing at River Lodge’s Courtyard Suite and climb to R45,000 at Karula during peak season. Transfers from Eastgate/Hoedspruit Airport are complimentary.

How to Get to Kapama
By air — commercial: The nearest airport is Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit), reached daily from Johannesburg OR Tambo and Cape Town International. All Kapama lodges offer a complimentary road transfer from Eastgate in open game-viewing vehicles — your safari effectively starts the moment you land.
By air — private/chartered: Kapama operates its own Pilatus PC-12 fly-in service. OR Tambo (Johannesburg) to Kapama’s on-reserve airstrip takes under one hour. Private charters from Pretoria Wonderboom and Cape Town are also available. Fly-in packages are ideal for honeymooners, time-pressed travelers, or anyone wanting to avoid the 6-hour JHB road transfer.
By road: Johannesburg to Kapama is approximately 5.5 to 6 hours by self-drive.
The Five Lodges of Kapama
Kapama is one of the only Greater Kruger reserves where you can match the lodge precisely to the trip: adults-only tented intimacy, family villas with private vehicles, contemporary river-view luxury, or a Relais & Châteaux-listed elephant sanctuary stay.

Camp Jabulani and the Rescued Elephant Herd
Camp Jabulani’s elephant herd is the single clearest reason to choose this lodge over any other in the Greater Kruger region. The story begins in June 1997, when a roughly four-month-old bull calf was found abandoned and stuck in the mud of a silt dam. He was hand-raised at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre and named Jabulani — Zulu for “rejoice.”
In 2002, a herd of elephants displaced from Zimbabwe was relocated to the Kapama reserve. That year, the matriarch Tokwe accepted the young Jabulani into her herd. The herd has since grown and in 2021 the Roode family formalised their elephant-care work through the HERD Trust (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development). The rehabilitated herd now numbers 16 elephants, including Khanyisa — a rare albino calf born in 2019 and rescued from a snare in January 2020.
What the elephant experience actually is: Guests observe the elephants in their natural environment — foraging in the bush, walking through the reserve, or swimming at the waterhole — and meet two of the dominant bulls, with carers sharing each elephant’s story. This is an observation-based experience, not a ride and not a walk on a lead. Modern conservation ethics have moved away from elephant-back safaris, and Camp Jabulani’s model reflects that shift. A mandatory elephant levy (R1,200 per person per night at Superior Suites) funds ongoing care of the herd through the HERD Trust.
2026 Lodge Rates
All Kapama lodge rates are all-inclusive: breakfast, lunch and dinner; two game drives daily; a guided bush walk; selected local and premium drinks; and complimentary road transfer from Eastgate/Hoedspruit Airport.

Single travelers pay a 50% supplement at the four main Kapama lodges.

Kapama for Families
Kapama is one of the most genuinely family-capable reserves in the Greater Kruger. Three things make it work:
- Three lodges welcome children of all ages: Southern Camp, River Lodge, and Karula. Only Buffalo Camp is adults-only (16+).
- Family Villa configurations: Southern Camp and Karula both offer Family Villas with a connected second bedroom for children, their own en-suite, and an outdoor patio. River Lodge’s Tamboti Superior Suites have an interleading option that works the same way.
- Karula Family Villa includes a dedicated private safari vehicle and guide — so your game-drive pace and stops are set by your family, not another couple’s agenda.
Age Policies
| Age Group | Game Drives | Bush Walks | Buffalo Camp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 | Not permitted on regular drives. Kapama runs “bush bumble” activity instead. | Not permitted | Not permitted |
| Ages 6 to 12 | Welcome at ranger’s discretion; must be with a responsible adult. Children under 12 pay 50% when sharing with 2 adults (select rooms). | Not permitted (under 16) | Not permitted |
| 13 to 15 | Welcome | Not permitted (under 16) | Not permitted (strictly 16+) |
| 16+ | Welcome | Welcome | Welcome |
Kapama for Honeymooners
Three natural honeymoon routes at Kapama:
- River Lodge Royal Suite: Dual showers overlooking wildlife, a large private patio, and access to River Lodge’s wine cellar and two pools. The best-value romantic option at Kapama.
- Karula Superior Villa: Private heated pool per villa, indoor/outdoor showers, panoramic Klaserie views, and the glass-encased Karula Wellness Centre for couples’ treatments. The flagship honeymoon choice.
- Buffalo Camp tent: For couples who want canvas, candlelight, and no children within the fence line. Adults-only by policy (16+).
Private bush dinners are available at all Kapama lodges at additional cost.
Wildlife and Activities
The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and African buffalo — are all resident at Kapama. Beyond the Big Five, the reserve records 40+ mammal species and 350+ bird species including giraffe, zebra, hippo, impala, lilac-breasted roller, and martial eagle.
African wild dogs are not a resident population — they move through Kapama from neighbouring reserves and are a lucky sighting rather than expected. Cheetah sightings are reported but less predictable than in open-traversing reserves further east.
Twice-daily game drives run in open 4×4 vehicles with an experienced ranger and tracker. In summer, morning drives depart around 06:00 and afternoon drives around 16:30; in winter, times shift to 06:30 and 16:00. Each drive is roughly 3 hours.
Other activities:
- Guided bush walks after breakfast (minimum age 16, at the lodge manager’s discretion)
- Spa and wellness at the Karula Wellness Centre and River Lodge Wellness Centre
- Bush dinners at additional cost (all lodges)
- “Bush bumble” — dedicated activity for children under 6
- Private safari vehicle available on request at all lodges (included with Karula Family Villa)
When to Visit Kapama
| Season | Months | Weather | Wildlife Viewing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dry season (best game viewing) | May to September | Winter. Cool mornings (~8°C), mild days (~26°C). Bring layers for early drives. | Best. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate near water. | Peak demand; book well in advance |
| Green season | October to April | Summer. Days up to 42°C, nights ~20°C. Concentrated rainfall. | Good. Newborn animals, intense birdlife, dramatic skies. | Malaria risk; prophylaxis recommended. Lower rates. |
| Shoulder (best value) | April, October | Mild temperatures, transitional | Very good. Thinner crowds. | Often the best-value months at Kapama |
Kapama vs Other Greater Kruger Reserves
| Reserve | Size | Entry Price (from, pp/pn) | Traversing | Best For | Unique Draw |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kapama | 15,000 ha | From R12,000 | Private, not traversing into Kruger | Range of budgets, families, elephants | Five lodges on one reserve + Camp Jabulani herd |
| Sabi Sand | ~65,000 ha | From R15,000 | Unfenced with Kruger NP | Leopard sightings, ultra-luxury | Highest Big Cat densities in Greater Kruger |
| Timbavati | ~53,000 ha | From R12,000 | Unfenced with Kruger NP | White lion heritage, traditional lodges | White lion population |
| Thornybush | 14,000 ha | From R8,000 | Private, adjoins Kruger | Value Big Five, accessible | Entry-level private-reserve pricing |
| Manyeleti | 23,000 ha | From R6,000 | Unfenced with Kruger NP | Lower-budget private reserve | Quieter, fewer vehicles |
| Balule | 35,000 ha | From R4,500 | Unfenced with Kruger NP | Budget Big Five | Rugged, low-cost access to Greater Kruger |
Kapama’s distinguishing move is the range on a single reserve: you can book a first safari at Buffalo Camp, a multi-generational family trip at Southern Camp, and a honeymoon at Karula — all with one operator, one airport transfer, one reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Kapama safari cost? All-inclusive 2026 rates start at approximately R12,000 per person per night at River Lodge’s Courtyard Suite and run to R45,000 at Karula during peak season. The Karula Family Villa is R117,500 to R150,000 per villa per night and includes a dedicated private vehicle. A R500 per person per night conservation levy applies on top (increasing to R650 from July 2026).
Is Kapama family-friendly? Yes. Four of the five lodges welcome children. Southern Camp is the most family-focused, with Family Villas offering a connected second bedroom for children. River Lodge’s Tamboti Superior Suites have an interleading option. Karula’s Family Villa includes a private vehicle and guide. Only Buffalo Camp is adults-only (strictly 16+).
What honeymoon options does Kapama offer? The Royal Suite at River Lodge (dual showers with wildlife views), Karula Superior Villa (private heated pool, on-site spa), and Buffalo Camp tents (adults-only, canvas romance). Private bush dinners are available at all lodges.
Is Kapama malaria-free? No. Kapama is in a low-risk malaria area with a small risk during wet summer months (October to April). Antimalarial prophylaxis and insect repellent are recommended for wet-season travel. Consult your GP before departure.
What ages are allowed on Kapama game drives? Children under 6 are not permitted on regular game drives — Kapama runs a “bush bumble” activity for them instead. Children 6 to 12 join drives at the ranger’s discretion with a responsible adult. Under 16 are not permitted on guided bush walks. Buffalo Camp is strictly 16+.
Can you ride elephants at Camp Jabulani? No. Camp Jabulani’s elephant experience is observation-based: guests watch the rescued herd foraging, walking through the reserve, and swimming at the waterhole, and meet two of the dominant bulls. This reflects current conservation best practice and is distinct from elephant-back safaris.
What is included in Kapama’s nightly rate? All-inclusive: breakfast, lunch and dinner; two daily game drives; a guided bush walk; selected local and premium drinks; and complimentary road transfer from Eastgate/Hoedspruit Airport. Not included: conservation levy, spa treatments, laundry, telephone, shop purchases, and at Camp Jabulani, the mandatory elephant levy.
How do I get to Kapama? Fly into Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) from Johannesburg OR Tambo or Cape Town — all Kapama lodges offer a complimentary open-vehicle road transfer. For faster transit, Kapama operates a Pilatus PC-12 fly-in direct from OR Tambo to the on-reserve airstrip (under 1 hour). Self-drive from Johannesburg takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours.
What is the best time to visit Kapama? May to September (dry/winter) for the strongest game viewing — thinner vegetation and animals concentrated near water. October to April (green/summer) for lush scenery, newborns, and birdlife, though malaria risk is higher. April and October are often the best shoulder-month value.
Kapama vs Sabi Sand — which is better? Sabi Sand has the edge on Big Cat density and unfenced traversing with Kruger NP. Kapama has the edge on value-range lodging (R12,000 to R45,000 across five very different lodges), family configurations, and the Camp Jabulani rescued elephant herd — which Sabi Sand does not have. Sabi Sand suits the once-in-a-lifetime pure game-viewing trip; Kapama suits families, honeymooners, and first-time safari-goers wanting premium game viewing without the very top end of the price curve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Balule Nature Reserve?
Balule sits on the western boundary of Kruger National Park in Limpopo province, South Africa, at roughly 24°09′S 30°59′E, north of Hoedspruit and southwest of Phalaborwa.
How big is Balule Nature Reserve?
Approximately 40,000 hectares, with the reserve periodically expanding as adjoining landowners join the collective.
How many lodges are in Balule?
21-plus private safari lodges are documented in Balule, ranging from self-catering camps to 5-star flagships. This guide profiles the most cited: Pondoro, Mohlabetsi, Maninghi, Ezulwini (Billy’s and River) and Raptor Retreat.
What does a safari in Balule cost?
In 2026, from about R7,150 per person per night at 4-star Mohlabetsi (all-inclusive), R11,385 at 5-star Pondoro (chalet), up to $950 per person per night at Ezulwini’s ultra-luxury suites. Conservation fees of around R450 to R520 per person one way apply on top.
Which is the best Balule lodge for families?
Mohlabetsi is the most family-friendly at the mid-range tier — no minimum age, interleading family rooms, and children under 12 pay 50%. Ezulwini welcomes children under 10, although under-6s cannot join game drives. Pondoro and Raptor Retreat do not accept children under 12 and 13 respectively.
Which is the best Balule lodge for a honeymoon?
Ezulwini River Lodge’s Matumi Honeymoon Suite is the most explicit honeymoon pick — $1,450 per couple, with a private plunge pool, a massage for two, private dinner and private game drive included. Pondoro’s Luxury Suites are the 5-star alternative.
Is Balule malaria-free?
No. Balule, like the rest of Greater Kruger, sits in a low-risk malaria area — risk is higher in the summer wet season (roughly October to April). Consult a travel clinic about prophylaxis and use repellent at dawn and dusk regardless of season.
How do I get to Balule?
Fly into Eastgate Airport, Hoedspruit (HDS) for most lodges, Phalaborwa (PHW) for northern Balule, or KMIA Nelspruit if combining with southern Kruger. All major lodges arrange road transfers — for reference, Pondoro’s 2026 one-way transfer from Hoedspruit is R895 per person sharing (two guests).
Balule vs Timbavati — which is better?
Balule is typically the stronger value, with more lodges across a wider price range, including genuine mid-range options Timbavati doesn’t offer. Timbavati is famous for its white lion genetics and sits at a generally higher price point. For first-time APNR travellers on a moderate budget, Balule usually wins on value; for trophy leopard or white-lion-chasing luxury, Timbavati edges ahead.
Are children allowed at Balule lodges?
Yes at family-friendly lodges (Mohlabetsi has no minimum age; Ezulwini welcomes children under 10 but does not allow under-6s on game drives). Pondoro does not accept children under 12, and Raptor Retreat does not accept children under 13.
